2018 Road Race Round-Up

What a season for the WHH 2018 road race league!

Trophy 3rd Oxfordshire GP RR Championship 2018

The triumph of the year being the ladies team receiving the 3rd place team cup in the Oxon Grand Prix series, a significant accomplishment for a small club punching well above its weight in the local league!

The ladies trophy was won this year by Katie Smith with a very cool 230 points (out of her best 8 results), out of a possible max of 240. Katie scored a total of 300 points towards the road race league in total taking part in 12 of the events. This also in the season where she accomplished her first ultra-marathon in the Brecon Beacons, a hilly (2000m ascent) 35 miles and followed this up in the summer with the Race to the Stones, a cool 67 miles or 100 kms which she accomplished in scorching heat in ~12:45 mins coming 26 in her age category, an amazing result.

Pippa Mack won the vet ladies category. Pip has also had a fantastic season of firsts, completing Abingdon marathon (her first marathon) in a time of 3:44. Pippa completed an amazing 14 races and scored 325 points overall – our highest scorer for ladies and chaps, 220 from her best 8 results. Pippa made significant inroads to her PBs for 5k and 10k during the year, testament to excellent training throughout the season.

Great results were also achieved by Fran Walker, Jan McCabe and Rebekah Colliass – all taking part in 8 races and setting personal bests.

In the men’s league Terry Cooper was the worthy winner of the men’s senior category. Terry also scored 230 points from his best 8 races and 307 points overall from 12 races.

Jason Cooke won the veterans men category at the last race (with 185 points from his best 8), from a very on-form Simon Leech (our retiring chairmen). Simon had set PBs across the board over the summer making serious inroads in his 5k, 5m and 10k times and achieving sub 90 mins for his half marathon. Simon was a worthy winner of the clubs London Marathon place which is drawn from a ballot of all those who have completed 8 races in the road league. Special mention to Martin Smith and Simon Harris as well. Martin knocked ~12 mins off his 10k time over the season and was third place vet male and Simon H was second place senior make, achieving 35 min time for his 10k in the year and running 115 miles in the summer, 100 miles in 20hrs and 45 mins a truly inspiring achievement.
