We have a range of sessions during the week. You can either dip in & out to fit around your busy life, or you can work with the coaches and build your training program around them. e.g. Tues – ABC, Thurs – Intervals, Sun – Long run.
End July ’20: Following the gradual relaxing of lockdown rules and England Athletics updated guidance our training sessions have restarted. There is still one virtual session for seniors per week to which has been added one physical training session. Physical sessions are also running for the older and younger junior groups. In the case of the younger ones (aged 8 to low teens) these are currently for up to 15 athletes per week and to accommodate our numbers athletes can only attend on alternate weeks. In all cases athletes have to register for the sessions in advance so we know numbers. Furthermore some training venues have been changed from those given below.
Thursday 6.55pm (This is the club’s main training session)
Location: King Alfred’s Academy West Site, Challow Road, Wantage, OX12 9DU
Typically an hours training usually under the supervision of Club Coaches.
We welcome any aspiring athlete aged 8 upwards.
In the summer all Juniors meet at King Alfred’s West Site (as above).
During the winter months (essentially the autumn and spring terms) the Juniors split into two different focus sessions through the winter:
- Group 1 (8-11/12 year olds). Training remains at King Alfred’s College West Site making use of the Sportshall. Timing as above: 7-8pm.
- Group 2 (Older Juniors – years 7 and above). Meet at 7pm at Wantage Leisure Centre. There is a warm up on the 6th Form field, then over to Wantage Park for Hill work, strength and conditioning
We usually have three groups of seniors
- Coached session – e.g. intervals, hills, etc. Here is link to Sep ’19 to Mar ’20 schedule.
- Social – 8.30-11 min/mile pace
- Welcome Group 11 min/mile plus pace
The Saturday Social Run is definitely worth getting up for, as it usually takes in scenic Oxfordshire trails and sometimes includes breakfast at the end! Details of meeting at the following locations. More info
On non-race days there is a guided trail run through the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside. (sometimes followed by tea & cake). Typically we’ll run on The Ridgeway, but occasionally seek out new routes around Oxford, Hungerford or Savernake Forest.
It’s a long social run, at talking pace.

Competitive Juniors & Seniors. 7pm.
An intervals track session under the supervision of Club Coaches at Tilsley Park Athletics Track (Dunmore Rd, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, OX14 1PU.) This is for Seniors and Juniors in Year 7 and above. Note: Fees to use the athletics track are usually Senior £4.50 / Junior £3.50.
Structured Training Sessions:
Our Run Leaders have put together the training plan for any Harriers wanting to build their pace, distance and improve their form. For 2019/20, we’re running two structured sessions each week (Tuesday and Thursdays).
