Vets League Match 4
The final match of the Vets League Athletics was held on the hot sunny afternoon of Sunday 5th July at Palmer Park in Reading.
A small team from WHH did their best in the sweltering conditions and three more Club Records were set.
Kathryn Leech finally claimed W60 Discus Club Record, and also improved her W60 Shot Put Club Record by 2cm. This performance completed a clean sweep of her age category throws Club Records, and was a great return after shoulder replacement surgery in 2025.
Clare Hazell (W55) ran in 100m and 400m, and at just after 3.30pm put in a determined and measured run in the 3000m, drawing on her distance running experience to gradually pick off the slower runners. She finished 7th out of 16 runners, and was comfortably ahead of four of the women in the W35 age category! Needless to say, she also added the W55 3000m Club Record (previously set by Marion Jones in 1993) to complete her season’s clean sweep of the track W55 running distances: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m and 5000m. Huge congratulations!
Gareth Smith, Richard Jegou and Kathryn Leech served as Field Officials for the Women’s Triple Jump, and this final event on the Field put the 2026 Vets Season to bed.
Many thanks to all our athletes who participated, to Chris Wilder for encouraging athletes to take part, and to Bruce Charles, Gareth Smith and Richard Jegou for their good natured support acting as Officials on the Field.
